Some people fill independence with a single role, and some choose to fill it with many roles at once. Santi Diansari Hargianto is the latter: a former world taekwondo champion, former Deputy Chair of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission, a driver of cross-continental humanitarian programs alongside IBM Indonesia, holder of 14 MURI Records, and now Chairwoman of Wanita PERSAHI, steering legal awareness for Indonesian women. Eighty-one years into Indonesia's independence, her trail is a reminder that the struggle is never truly over — it simply moves to a new field.
From the Taekwondo Arena to the World Stage
Born in Jakarta on September 5, 1968, Santi's youth was defined by discipline and a passion for martial arts. She began with pencak silat, winning a silver medal at the national junior championship in 1979, before turning seriously to taekwondo. That path carried her from podium to podium: gold at the Senior National Taekwondo Championship (1984), the title of Best Athlete along with a gold medal at PON XI (1985), which earned her the title of Bintang PON XI ("Star of PON XI") from the daily newspaper Kompas, and then the pinnacle — a world championship title in the flyweight class at the World Taekwondo Championship in Berkeley, United States (1986), followed by a national title win at the Australian National Championship in Melbourne (1988).
Yet for Santi, victory on the mat was never only about medals. Achievement, she says, matters — but what matters more is how that knowledge and experience is passed on to raise a better generation. This principle is what has kept her, from 1989 to the present, active as a 6th Dan black-belt instructor, national taekwondo referee, and mentor to young athletes — she was even entrusted as an advisor for the development of the POPKI taekwondo training center, a joint project between Indonesia and South Korea.
Achievement matters, but what matters more is how we can raise a new generation that is even better.
From Children to Humanity
Santi's journey then turned toward the social sphere. In 2007, she was entrusted by the President of the Republic of Indonesia as Deputy Chair of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI). It was here that she became widely known as a vocal advocate for children's rights, especially for the marginalized — from advocacy and support for child victims of violence, to mediating children's issues at international UN forums in Geneva and Mongolia, to coordinating a ten-million-tree reforestation program that she brought to the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali (2007).
Not long after, she joined IBM Indonesia as Country Manager for Corporate Citizenship/CSR, connecting technology with humanitarian missions for more than a decade. The programs she initiated touched many fields: digital literacy, empowerment of coastal women, and access to technology for people with disabilities.
One of her most memorable initiatives was a movement to transcribe books into Braille and audiobooks for the visually impaired — involving more than 50,000 volunteers who retyped manuscript after manuscript. The movement produced tens of thousands of Braille books and led IBM Indonesia to win the award for best volunteer program among the 98 countries where IBM operates, in 2014. For Santi, this was more than a record — it was a simple way to open the door to equal literacy for all of the nation's children.

Pushing Women-Led SMEs Into the Digital World
Long before "digital transformation" became a common buzzword, Santi was already championing it among women-led SME operators across Indonesia. At an entrepreneurship empowerment forum held with the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs in 2018, she stressed that the technology was already at hand and that women entrepreneurs needed to be bold enough to build their own marketing applications, pointing to app-based businesses like Gojek and Grab, which at the time were transforming the face of the people's economy.
That call was more than rhetoric. Since 2013, Santi has led a series of entrepreneurship roadshows with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), HIPMI, KADIN, and the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs across the country — reaching 36 universities and around 28,000 students, as well as fishing families and communities in border regions. Her philosophy is simple but sharp: when farmers have a failed harvest or fishermen struggle to catch fish, a family's economy must still be able to stand firm, because the wife and other family members already have a business of their own.
Her commitment to entrepreneurship was also recognized by the state. In January 2015, she was inaugurated as Head of the New Entrepreneurship Division of the National Crafts Council (DEKRANAS) at the inauguration of the Central Board, led directly by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo at the Vice President's Palace.

Santi's approach was always tailored to what was needed on the ground — whether that meant training in fish processing, sewing, or product packaging designed to look more modern without losing its traditional flavor. For her, a product could be simple, but its packaging and marketing needed to be able to compete in a digital marketplace as vast as the world itself.
Another moment that underscored Santi's role as a bridge between technology and SME empowerment took place on Thursday, May 18, 2017, when the Graha Pos Indonesia building on Jalan Banda No. 30, Bandung, was packed with more than 600 SME operators and startups for the National "Mari Berdigital" Movement event, themed "Reviving the Local Economy through Going Digital." Organized by bDigital Indonesia together with the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, and supported by Midtrans and Indosat Ooredoo, the event featured three learning arenas at once: a Conference Arena for discussion on the direction of the national digital economy, a Tech & Digital Arena for digital marketing and e-commerce training, and a Business Growth Arena for mentoring on branding, legality, and SME financial management.
As Country Director of CSR at IBM Indonesia, Santi took part in a Q&A session outlining key technologies that could serve as accelerators for SMEs seeking to compete in an ever-growing digital market — echoing the call from Rama Dhonanto, Managing Director of PT bDigital Asia Indonesia, for SME operators to be bold and ready to go digital ahead of National Awakening Day. Also present were Agus Muharram, Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, and Soni Jiferson, Chair of the National "Mari Berdigital" Movement organizing committee, making the forum a symbol of collaboration between government, business, and the digital community to help Indonesian SMEs move up a level.

14 MURI Records for Indonesia
Few Indonesians can claim an achievement like Santi's: 14 records from the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) recorded under her name. These records grew out of a wide range of large-scale social initiatives — from coordinating trauma healing for tens of thousands of children affected by the West Sumatra earthquake as Head of the Earthquake Child Protection Command Post (2009), to arts and education performances involving thousands of children in remote parts of the country, to an initiative in which thousands of children wrote letters to the President of Indonesia on forest coconut leaves during a literacy and technology-donation program in Lanny Jaya, Papua.
Every record she set was never just a number. Behind each one lies a consistent message: that social work can be carried out creatively, with the involvement of many parties, and with an impact that reaches even the most remote corners rarely touched by others. Santi proves that filling independence with meaning is not only the state's task, but also the initiative of citizens who care and are willing to act first.
Women and the Law
Santi's work did not stop at sports and social action — she also pursued legal education, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree from IBLAM Institute Jakarta and continuing on to a Master of Laws. That foundation carried her to the role of Chairwoman of Wanita PERSAHI (the Indonesian Association of Women Law Graduates), an organization bringing together female law graduates and the wives of law graduates since its first Congress in Yogyakarta in 1961. She was first elected to lead the organization at the 2019 Congress for the 2019–2025 term, and was reaffirmed as its leader for the 2025–2030 term — now overseeing roughly 2,500 active members spread across 18 provinces.
Her inauguration for a second term took place at the 9th Congress of Wanita PERSAHI on February 15, 2025, at Wisma Elang Laut TNI AL in Menteng, Central Jakarta, under the theme "Wanita PERSAHI Safeguarding Legal Reform through a Culture of Legal Awareness Toward a Golden Indonesia 2045." The ceremony was marked by the signing of the Decree and the handover of the organization's ceremonial banner by the Chair of the Plenary Session, Diana Bachtiar, S.H. At the same event, the Chairwoman of KOWANI, Nannie Hadi Tjahjanto, S.H., was awarded the position of Chair of the Wanita PERSAHI Board of Supervisors — a clear affirmation of synergy between two of the country's largest women's organizations in safeguarding legal reform toward the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045.

Under her leadership, Wanita PERSAHI has actively held public discussions and legal education sessions, including a Focus Group Discussion on inheritance law aimed at raising Indonesian women's legal awareness of their rights. She has also pushed for synergy with other women's organizations such as KOWANI, raising strategic issues ranging from inheritance law and women's rights in marriage to gender-based legal protection — while expanding the organization's network into various regions, from a child food-security program with the Scout Movement to synergy with the provincial Coordinating Body for Women's Organizations.
Alongside the congress, Wanita PERSAHI also showed two sides of its concern: visiting an SME bazaar of partner-assisted small businesses as a tangible show of support for women's economic empowerment, while also opening space for children with disabilities to create and be heard — in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Geneva and Indonesia's 2002 Child Protection Law and its 2004 amendment.

Filling 81 Years of Independence
For Santi, independence is not a gift to be merely celebrated, but a space that must continually be filled with action. She fills that space with many roles at once: a former taekwondo athlete and coach, a social leader, a driver of legal awareness, and, at the same time, a mother of four children and wife of First Admiral (Ret.) Hargianto of the Indonesian Navy.
As Indonesia marks 81 years of independence, Santi's story is a reminder that today's struggle is no longer fought on a battlefield, but in far quieter spaces: educating the nation's children, empowering communities left behind, protecting the vulnerable, and upholding the dignity of Indonesian women before the law.
